THOMAS SYKES FROM YORK CAUGHT WITH OVER 1,100 CHILD SEXUAL IMAGES AND VIDEOS

Update 29/5/26 A man from York has received a prison sentence of over two years after being convicted of sexually abusing a young girl.

Thomas Sykes, aged 35, inappropriately touched the child’s private area and instructed her to remain silent about the incident, as outlined during a hearing at York Crown Court.

The incident, which occurred in 2017 and profoundly affected the victim, took place while Sykes was engaged in downloading numerous indecent images of children online.

The young girl, whose identity cannot be revealed legally, concealed the abuse for several years until she understood that such actions were criminal and the case was finally reported to authorities.

Sykes, residing on Beech Grove, faced charges of sexually assaulting a minor under the age of 13 but denied the allegations.

However, he was found guilty during a trial held in April and appeared in court for sentencing the following Wednesday.

In court, the victim’s statement was read out, expressing her perception that Sykes was not remorseful, stating, “He is not sorry for what he did to me.

He is unable to admit what he did.

I believe this makes him dangerous.” Prosecutor Ayman Khokar highlighted that Sykes had prior convictions involving 11 offenses from 2020 and 2022, which included creating indecent images of children and breaching a sexual-harm prevention order that required him to disclose any new internet-enabled devices to police.

At the time, Sykes, then living in Clifton, had downloaded a total of 1,100 pornographic images and videos depicting children as young as four years old over two years.

In July 2020, he was sentenced to a three-year community order, a five-year sexual-harm prevention order, and required to participate in a sex-offender treatment program—consequences that contributed to the end of his marriage.

Two years later, he appeared again in court for breaching the order and received another community order.

Defence lawyer Lily Wildman stated that Sykes is employed and has adhered to the court orders, including a program aimed at rehabilitating offenders with online sexual offenses.

She noted that he still has support from his family and his current partner.

Judge Simon Hickey emphasized the lasting trauma caused to the young victim, describing the impact as “significant and long-lasting.” Addressing Sykes, the judge remarked, “When a perpetrator tells a child, ‘keep quiet, it’s our little secret,’ that’s precisely what happens.

The victim felt embarrassed and ashamed, and she kept it secret for years.

She has lost trust in adult males.” The judge also pointed out that Sykes’s plea of not guilty demonstrated a lack of remorse.

Despite positive references about his character and employment, he stressed that the gravity of the crime involving a very young girl warranted imprisonment.

Consequently, Sykes was sentenced to two years and three months in prison, with an additional ten-year period on the sex-offenders’ register.

Additionally, he was subjected to a new 10-year sexual-harm prevention order restricting his online activity and prohibiting him from working with children or vulnerable adults.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of York, Thomas Sykes, a 29-year-old man, was found to possess an extensive collection of illegal and highly disturbing images and videos depicting child abuse.

The incident came to light in July 2020, when authorities uncovered the extent of Sykes' illicit activities during a police raid at his residence in Lady Mill Garth, Clifton.

According to the prosecution led by Paul Newcombe, Sykes had been actively searching the internet for indecent images of young children over a period of two years.

The police investigation revealed that Sykes' obsession with such material was both persistent and deeply troubling.

When law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his home, they discovered a staggering collection of more than 1,100 sexual videos and photographs involving children as young as four to six years old.

The images and videos found on Sykes' mobile phone were categorized into different levels of severity.

The police identified four videos and 74 pictures of the most severe category of abuse, which involved the most extreme forms of exploitation.

Additionally, there were four videos and 460 pictures classified as middle-category abuse, and 11 videos along with 592 pictures of the least serious form of abuse.

These findings underscored the disturbing nature of Sykes' collection and his apparent interest in exploiting very young children.

Thomas Sykes pleaded guilty to six charges related to possessing indecent images of children, as well as a charge for possessing a single image of extreme pornography.

His guilty plea was entered during the court proceedings, which led to a sentencing that included a three-year community order.

As part of his rehabilitation, Sykes was mandated to participate in a sex offender treatment program and undertake 30 days of rehabilitative activities.

Furthermore, Sykes was placed on the sex offenders' register and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order, both for a period of five years.

These measures are designed to monitor and restrict his activities to prevent any further harm.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and judicial authorities to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those involved in such crimes.
