THOMAS MULROY FROM CHATHAM SENTENCED FOR VIOLENT RAPE AND ATTACK
Thomas Mulroy, a 56-year-old resident of New Road in Chatham, has been found guilty and sentenced for a brutal assault that involved rape and significant violence. The incident took place on the evening of March 27, 2021, when Mulroy was at his home with a woman. Without warning, he launched a violent attack on her, which escalated into a rape. During the assault, Mulroy caused damage to her phone as she attempted to call for help, effectively preventing her from seeking immediate assistance. His actions also included physically restraining her, making it impossible for her to leave his property despite her efforts to escape.The victim managed to break free from Mulroy’s grasp and fled the scene. She promptly contacted Medway police to report the assault, providing crucial details that led to his swift arrest. Mulroy was taken into custody early the following day, March 28, and was formally charged with two counts of rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. During the legal proceedings, Mulroy admitted guilt to all charges except for the rape counts, which he contested in court.
After a trial held at Maidstone Crown Court, the jury found Mulroy guilty of the rape charges. On September 27, 2024, he was sentenced to serve a minimum term of nine years and three months in prison. The court’s decision also included a risk assessment to determine whether Mulroy would be eligible for parole in the future. Detective Constable Jane Lowe of Kent Police praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward and expressed her satisfaction with the length of the sentence. She also conveyed hope that this outcome would bring some measure of closure to the victim, acknowledging the trauma she endured during the ordeal.
