THOMAS FRIEL FROM BURTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRL IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
In June 2019, Thomas Friel, a resident of Burton, was convicted and subsequently sentenced for serious sexual offenses involving a schoolgirl. The case revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that began when Friel was just 19 years old, targeting a young girl who was significantly underage.
According to court proceedings, Friel, then 21, initiated contact with the girl, exchanging explicit photographs with her before engaging in sexual activity.
The exchanges included intimate images shared between the two, which Friel encouraged her to send.
The court heard that Friel stayed at her residence in Burton for a weekend, during which they engaged in sexual acts.
The prosecutor, Paul Spratt, detailed that the two had met on one occasion after engaging in conversations that escalated to physical intimacy.
It was also revealed that the girl confided in an adult about the inappropriate relationship, leading to Friel's arrest and police investigation.
During questioning, Friel admitted he was aware of the girl’s age and expressed remorse for his conduct, acknowledging that his behavior was reprehensible.
Friel, who resides on Shobnall Street in Burton and has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual activity with a child.
His guilty plea was accepted by the court, which considered his lack of previous convictions and the fact that his electronic devices showed no evidence of broader predatory interests.
Defense counsel, Stephen Hennessey, argued that Friel accepted responsibility for his actions and that he was immature at the time of the offenses.
Hennessey emphasized that the defendant’s electronic devices were examined and found to contain no material suggesting a wider interest in exploiting minors.
He suggested that Friel would benefit from intervention and that an immediate custodial sentence was not necessary, highlighting that Friel was not a habitual online predator but someone who had learned a lesson and could continue to do so with proper support.
However, the presiding judge, Paul Glenn, emphasized the gravity of the offenses.
He stated that Friel’s actions, including the exchange of explicit images and the sexual encounter, were serious violations.
The judge pointed out that the girl had consented to some aspects of the interaction, but Friel’s disregard for her age and his grooming behavior were unacceptable.
The court noted that Friel had planned his actions and solicited sexual images from the girl, which constituted grooming behavior.
Judge Glenn sentenced Friel to two-and-a-half years in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Additionally, Friel was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
The judge underscored the importance of protecting children from exploitation and emphasized that Friel’s conduct was unlawful and morally reprehensible, warranting a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent and to uphold the safety of minors in the community.
