ANDREW POPE SHOCKS BURTON WITH 18 SEX CRIME CONVICTIONS AT STAFFORD CROWN COURT
A man identified as Andrew Robert Pope, aged 56 and residing in Burton-on-Trent, has been convicted of a total of 18 serious criminal charges related to child sexual offenses. The verdict was delivered by a jury at Stafford Crown Court on the 3rd of June, following a comprehensive trial that lasted several days.Authorities initiated an investigation into Pope’s activities in May of the previous year, after one survivor courageously came forward to disclose details of their abuse. This initial disclosure prompted detectives to delve deeper into the case, leading to interviews with multiple survivors who provided crucial testimonies and evidence. The investigation aimed to uncover the full extent of Pope’s alleged misconduct.
During the course of their inquiry, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Pope’s residence in Burton. As part of the search, they confiscated his mobile phone, which was later found to contain indecent images of children. This discovery added further weight to the case against him and contributed to the charges he faced.
As the investigation progressed, another survivor stepped forward, revealing additional instances of abuse committed by Pope. This new information expanded the scope of the case and reinforced the evidence against him. Despite denying all allegations during police interviews, Pope was formally charged with multiple offenses based on the collected evidence and survivor testimonies.
In total, Pope faced 18 charges, which included seven counts of rape involving a girl, nine counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl, one count of producing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The trial culminated in a guilty verdict on all counts, reflecting the strength of the evidence and the bravery of the survivors who came forward.
Detective Sergeant Gemma Szalapski, a member of the rape and serious sexual offences unit, commented on the case, stating: “By working tirelessly to find out the extent of Pope’s crimes, we were able to help another survivor come forward and seek the right support. It is their immeasurable bravery that has resulted in this outcome. I’m pleased that the verdict was reached and all of Pope’s offending will be recognised, despite his attempts to hide the truth.”
Pope is scheduled to be sentenced at Stafford Crown Court on October 3rd of this year, where the court will determine the length and nature of his imprisonment based on the severity of his crimes.
