STEVEN STAPLETON FROM STEVENAGE JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND GROOMING IN ONLINE CHAT ROOMS

In December 2014, a man from Stevenage, identified as Steven Stapleton, was sentenced to serve a significant prison term after admitting to multiple serious sex offences involving minors. The case drew considerable attention due to the nature of the crimes, which involved online grooming and unlawful sexual activity with underage girls.

Stapleton, aged 29 at the time, was found to have engaged in a series of disturbing online interactions with young girls, attempting to lure them into meeting him in person. His actions included trying to arrange meetings with two girls he had communicated with through internet chat rooms, with the intent of exploiting them sexually. The authorities revealed that Stapleton, who formerly resided in Stevenage but was at the time without a fixed address, was arrested in August 2013 following an incident earlier that month when he attempted to meet a girl under the age of 16 in the town.

Further investigations uncovered that Stapleton had also engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with another girl under the age of 16, with the abuse occurring sometime between August 2007 and August 2008. These revelations added to the severity of his charges and underscored the long-standing nature of his criminal behaviour.

The case was brought before St Albans Crown Court, where the prosecution detailed how Hertfordshire Constabulary’s dedicated Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST) played a pivotal role in apprehending Stapleton. The arrest was prompted by a concerned member of the public who reported a video posted online, which showed Stapleton being confronted by an individual posing as a child. This individual had deliberately set out to meet him in order to expose his grooming activities.

In addition to the grooming charges, Stapleton faced allegations of publishing obscene articles, related to explicit conversations he had engaged in within online chat rooms. The police investigation included speaking directly to the victims and obtaining warrants to access chat accounts used by Stapleton to communicate with young girls, which proved crucial in building the case against him.

Det Sgt Laura Randall, who leads the COST team, praised her officers for their relentless efforts in gathering evidence from internet service providers, emphasizing how vital this was to securing the conviction. She stated, “The tenacity of my officers to gain evidence from internet site providers proved vital in this case. I hope this sentence sends a clear message to other offenders that we will use every tool available to us to bring those committing these appalling crimes to justice.”

She further highlighted the emotional toll such cases take on victims, their families, and communities, reaffirming Hertfordshire Constabulary’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and pursuing justice. Det Sgt Randall also encouraged victims of abuse to come forward, assuring them that their cases would be handled with sensitivity and thorough investigation, emphasizing that seeking help is crucial for those affected by such crimes.
