GRIMSBY SEX OFFENDER STEVEN SHARLOTTE SENTENCED FOR ABUSING CHILDREN
In April 2014, a disturbing case concluded with the sentencing of Steven Sharlotte, a 53-year-old sex offender from Grimsby, who was found guilty of heinous crimes involving the abuse of two young girls and a boy.The court proceedings revealed a series of serious offences committed by Sharlotte, leading to a substantial prison sentence.
Steven Sharlotte, residing on Granville Street in Grimsby, was convicted by a jury at Grimsby Crown Court on multiple counts of sexual misconduct.
The charges included four counts of indecency with a boy, two counts of indecent assault on a girl, and two additional counts of indecent assault on another girl.
The verdict reflected the gravity of his actions, and he was subsequently sentenced to five years and three months behind bars.
Following the trial, Temporary Detective Sergeant Jason Nutting, who is part of the public protection unit, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome.
He stated, “I am happy that the sentence of five years and two months imprisonment handed down to Steven Sharlotte reflects adequately on the offences that he was found guilty of, and hopefully sends out a clear message to others that the Police and the Crown Prosecution Service will work together and seek to bring offenders to justice.” Sergeant Nutting further explained that Sharlotte’s crimes were committed many years ago when his victims were still children.
He highlighted that, in some cases, the victims had initially disclosed their abuse to others, which prompted Sharlotte to attempt to silence them by approaching the police first.
“This was seen by one victim specifically as Sharlotte trying to dominate them and ensure that they maintained their silence,” Nutting said.
He added that, over time, the victims found the courage to come forward and share their experiences publicly, despite the emotional and psychological toll involved.
He emphasized the bravery of the victims, noting that their decision to speak out was crucial in ensuring justice was served.
“Without this courage shown by each of them, Steven Sharlotte would have been free to get away with the offences accused of and at liberty to offend against other vulnerable young people,” Nutting remarked.
The detective also acknowledged the support provided by professionals such as Kirsty Hodges, an Independent Sexual Violence Adviser, who assisted the victims throughout the investigation.
Sergeant Nutting concluded by expressing gratitude to all involved in the case, stating, “The stress and pressure on each of the victims, and the witnesses involved in the process, has been hard for them all to deal with.
I would like to pass on my personal and professional thanks and gratitude to everyone who supported the victims.
Thanks to their bravery and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and support agencies, justice has been achieved, and steps will be taken to ensure they receive any necessary ongoing support to recover from this traumatic experience.”
