TOURIST JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON GIRLFRIEND IN PERTHSHIRE HOTEL
A holidaymaker named Steven Jones, aged 52, visited east Perthshire last month and committed a serious assault on his partner during a romantic trip which turned violent. The incident occurred at the Angus Hotel in Blairgowrie, where concern from guests was raised after hearing screams from upstairs.
Staff discovered Jones holding his blood-covered partner by her neck, and he subsequently fled after being caught.
Jones had a prior conviction for assaulting the same woman in 2019 and admitted to the assault on November 5.
He was sentenced to eight months in jail by Perth Sheriff Court, with Sheriff Lindsay Foulis stating, “I don’t think it is denied that this is a serious matter involving significant violence being visited on a complainer who is vulnerable.” Jones was also ordered to stay away from his victim for at least three years under a non-harassment order.
The court heard that Jones, who has a history of violence and was intoxicated, accused his partner of infidelity, which led to the assault involving seizing her by the head and body, refusing to let her leave, and dragging her by the body into a room.
During the incident, other guests heard screaming, and staff found her with blood on her face and a cut below her left eye, though she declined medical treatment.
Jones was arrested and cautioned, denying his involvement, and police confirmed his return to the hotel after fleeing.
His actions were described as 'out of character' by his solicitor despite his previous conviction.
