MONTROSE MURDER: OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL BODY IN BINS KILLING
Steven Jackson, aged 40, was convicted in a lengthy trial following a five-week hearing in the High Court in Glasgow.According to court proceedings, he was responsible for the brutal murder of Kimberley MacKenzie, a mother of three.
The court heard that Jackson assaulted Ms.
MacKenzie in her flat in Montrose, striking her at least 11 times on the head and stabbing her more than 40 times with two knives.
The attack was described as frenzied, and during the trial, Higgins claimed Jackson targeted her suddenly after she visited the home she shared with him.
Jackson admitted to launching the attack and later told police that Michelle hit Kim in the head with a hammer and finished her off by cutting her throat.
He then chopped her body in the bath, dismembering her into 12 pieces, with some parts, including her head, dumped in bins and others stored in a children's rucksack and suitcase.
Higgins, his girlfriend, was found guilty of helping Jackson dispose of the remains, as she helped store and ultimately dump parts of Ms MacKenzie’s body.
The judge described the crimes as 'horrific' and 'depraved,' expressing difficulty in finding words to describe such acts.
Jackson was convicted of murder and dismemberment, and Higgins was found guilty of aiding in the disposal of the body.
The sentence for both offenders was scheduled to be handed down at the High Court in Livingston on 17 January.
The court noted that these acts were among the most distressing crimes the judge had ever encountered, and the jury was excused from duty for ten years following their verdict.
