BROMSGROVE MAN STEPHEN INSLEY SENTENCED IN REDDITCH FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In July 2015, Stephen Insley, a resident of Bromsgrove, was sentenced to prison after admitting to engaging in sexual acts with a 12-year-old girl.

Insley, who was 28 at the time, was taken to Alexandra Hospital in Redditch following his second attempt at suicide, a gesture driven by guilt over his actions.

While recovering, he confessed to hospital staff and later to police that he had had sexual encounters with the girl on two occasions approximately eight or nine years earlier.

Prosecutor Balvinder Bhatti explained that Insley's confession was crucial to the case’s progression, as the victim had not filed a formal complaint.

Bhatti stated, “Without his confession the case would probably not have come to light because the victim had not made a complaint about the offences.” Insley's address was listed as Catherine Close, and he was admitted to hospital on August 15, last year, citing his inability to live with the guilt.

During interviews, he admitted that he had sexual relations with the girl on two separate occasions when she was under 13.

Insley pleaded guilty to two counts of raping a child under 13, which led to the conviction.

His defense, represented by Abigail Nixon, highlighted the unusual circumstances of the case, emphasizing that it was entirely based on Insley’s confession.

Nixon explained, “The case was extraordinary because it was based entirely on his confession.

The victim had not made a complaint and would not have been produced in court if Insley had chosen to plead not guilty and proceed to trial.” She added that without the victim or supporting statements, “the jury might have decided that they could not find him guilty.” Judge Michael Cullum acknowledged the case’s unusual nature and the difficulty he faced in sentencing.

Although there was no victim impact statement, the judge noted that any young girl subjected to such experiences would likely have been “scarred” by the incident.

Insley was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for each charge, to run concurrently.

Additionally, he will be required to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely.
