STEPHEN CARNELL FROM TONYPANDY JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN RHONDDA

In a shocking case that has sent ripples through the community of Tonypandy and the wider Rhondda area, Stephen Carnell, a man with ties to prominent political figures, was sentenced to three years in prison for possessing an extensive and disturbing collection of child pornography. The 58-year-old former councillor and chairman of a local school governors was found to have accumulated over 12,500 illicit images and videos depicting children in various states of abuse, some of the most severe that law enforcement officials have encountered.

According to court proceedings, Carnell’s descent into this disturbing activity began approximately eight years prior to his arrest. Over this period, he developed an obsession with downloading and sharing highly disturbing material, which included images classified at the most serious levels four and five. These images depicted sexual acts involving children, sadistic acts, and even bestiality, highlighting the extreme nature of his collection.

When police arrived at Carnell’s residence in Tonypandy, Rhondda, he did not attempt to evade them. Instead, he admitted to their presence and stated, “The child pornography is on my laptops. I’ve been stupid.” Authorities found him to be using five different laptops and engaging in file-sharing activities with other individuals involved in similar illegal pursuits. Prosecutor David Pugh detailed that a significant portion of the images and videos were of children ranging from infants as young as 12 months to 11 years old.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Carnell, who is divorced and a father of two, denied any attraction to children in real life. He had previously pleaded guilty to 47 charges related to the making, possession, and distribution of indecent images. The court heard that his collection included 12,130 images and 453 videos, all depicting minors in various stages of abuse.

During the trial, Stephen Jury, representing Carnell, emphasized his client’s prior good character and cooperation with police following his arrest. However, Judge John Curran was unequivocal in his condemnation, stating that the victims in the images had been subjected to “the most appalling abuse.” As part of his sentence, Carnell was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was permanently barred from working with children.

It was also revealed that Carnell served as the official electoral agent for Labour MP Chris Bryant when he secured his victory in the Rhondda constituency, winning by a majority of 17,183 votes. Following the conviction, Welsh Labour in Cardiff confirmed that Carnell had been expelled from the party immediately. A spokesperson for Mr. Bryant declined to comment further, stating that any official statement would come from the party itself.
