SIMON KNOWLES OF BRIDLINGTON AND HARROGATE JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CRIMES IN YORKSHIRE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Bridlington and Harrogate, Simon Knowles, a 52-year-old man, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after admitting to a series of heinous crimes involving the exploitation and illegal recording of children. The offences, which spanned from 2009 until his arrest in April 2012, came to light following a thorough investigation by North Yorkshire Police.

Knowles, who was once a respected teacher at a school in North Yorkshire, concealed cameras in everyday objects such as pens and shirt buttons to secretly film children during their PE and swimming changing routines. These covert devices allowed him to capture footage of unsuspecting youngsters in vulnerable moments, a betrayal of trust that has left parents and the wider community appalled.

The revelation of his crimes only emerged after police received a tip-off, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges. During the investigation, authorities uncovered a staggering collection of illicit material stored on Knowles’ computer, including 19,541 indecent photographs of children and 174 videos depicting similar content. Additionally, evidence showed that he had distributed 147 indecent images, further compounding the severity of his actions.

Knowles, who previously resided in Harrogate before moving to Bridlington, had managed to maintain a facade of respectability. Det Sgt Mark Jackson of North Yorkshire Police described him as an educated man who, behind this veneer, was calculating and deceitful. Jackson emphasized that Knowles had deliberately used his technological knowledge to facilitate his criminal activities, employing disguised cameras to target innocent children.

Charges against Knowles included making and possessing indecent images of children, distributing such images, and recording individuals in private acts without their consent. His actions represent a profound breach of trust, especially given his role as an educator. The police investigation revealed the extent of his depravity, highlighting the lengths he went to indulge his twisted fantasies.

Det Sgt Jackson remarked on the betrayal involved, stating, “He was a well-liked teacher who had the respect of his colleagues and aspired to be an assistant head teacher. He completely abused his position of trust for his own sexual gratification. The level of betrayal, falseness, and dishonesty he has displayed over a number of years is rarely seen.”

The case gained further context when it was revealed that Knowles was linked to a similar incident in Surrey, where the perpetrator was contacting individuals nationwide, including Knowles himself. This connection underscored the widespread nature of the offending and the importance of the police investigation.

Following the sentencing, North Yorkshire County Council issued a statement expressing their cooperation and support throughout the investigation. They assured the public that both the school and local authorities had worked closely with law enforcement and supported parents during this distressing period, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding children and maintaining community trust.
