JOSHUA RICHARDSON
Richardson displayed a blatant disregard for his disqualification order, missing court appearances, and inflicting serious injuries that required hospital treatment, such as a severe eye injury, as outlined during proceedings at York Crown Court.
The prosecutor, Timothy Jacobs, explained that Richardson’s criminal activities began on July 20, 2022, when police stopped his white Transit van on Town Street, Malton, because he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Officers confirmed that Richardson was banned from driving and uninsured.
Five days later, still under investigation, he was found driving a black BMW on Stoney Haggs Road, Seamer, and was arrested again for driving while disqualified.
Three days afterward, Richardson entered his ex-partner’s home, seized her phone, and questioned her about her calls.
When she tried to retrieve her phone, he pushed her, causing her to fall onto a sofa and injure her head.
She attempted to push him toward the door, but he stood on her bare feet in boots.
He then strangled her twice, and when she tried to escape, pushed her against a wall.
Remarkably, Richardson then knelt down, cried, apologized to her, and offered her money to keep silent about the incident.
The victim suffered bruises on her foot and body, as well as marks on her neck from strangulation, and said she felt imprisoned in her own home.
Richardson faced a charge of intentional strangulation; he denied the offence but was convicted after trial.
Later, on October 3, he went to his ex-partner’s new boyfriend’s house in Scarborough in a van and shouted for her to come out.
When she refused, he threatened to break the doors down.
He tried the front door, which was locked, then forcefully entered through the unlocked back door.
Inside, he confronted her partner, pushed him into the hallway, and assaulted him by punching him in the neck and headbutting him, resulting in bloodied injuries.
A further altercation occurred where Richardson punched the man in the face and cheek.
He left threatening to return that night, forcing his victim to seek hospital treatment for his injuries.
The court took note of Richardson’s extensive criminal record, including 16 offences such as wounding, coercive control, and previous driving disqualifications.
He was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison, with the actual time served reduced due to pre-trial detention.
He was also banned from driving for 41 months.
