HEARTLESS DOG OWNER MOVED FLATS AND LEFT POOR POOCH BEHIND TO STARVE TO DEATH
Devey admitted two offences of causing unnecessary suffering to the 12-year-old Staffy and narrowly avoided jail with a six-month suspended sentence, with 100 hours of unpaid work and £904 costs.
During sentencing, Devey, now of Lupset in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was also disqualified from owning all animals for life.
Magistrates emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that she failed to look after her dog, Dray Dray, who was found severely emaciated and dead in her old flat after she vacated the premises in Bridlington.
The RSPCA investigation revealed that Dray Dray suffered greatly and unnecessarily for at least three weeks, likely dying from dehydration and starvation.
The post-mortem indicated that the dog had been in good condition on 17 January 2024 but was found dead on 22 March 2024 with signs of prolonged suffering.
Devey's actions represent extreme animal cruelty, and the court considered her age and lack of maturity in deciding the sentence.
She stated she was now in full-time employment and experienced ongoing health issues, and did not object to the disqualification order.
RSPCA Inspector Laura Barber expressed her distress at the case, highlighting the stark contrast between the dog’s condition in January and its death in March.
