STALKER JAILED FOR A YEAR
A man named Shuhan Shahid, aged 35, of Darwin Drive, Cambridge, has been sentenced to prison after repeatedly harassing his former girlfriend years after their breakup.Although their relationship lasted only a brief period in 2017, Shahid continued to visit her home unannounced and inundated her with phone calls and text messages.
During a court hearing at Peterborough Crown Court, it was revealed that he posed a threat to public safety, notably to women.
The woman, who sought police help, explained that Shahid’s ongoing contact was an attempt to rekindle their relationship.
However, when she made it clear she did not want this, he often responded with anger and threats of violence or property damage.
She also shared that Shahid was extremely jealous of her interactions with other men, which hindered her ability to move forward.
On the night of August 30 last year, Shahid unexpectedly arrived at her residence again.
He initially spoke about fishing before suggesting they get back together.
She insisted she did not want that and called police, telling Shahid to leave.
Despite her pleas, he hesitated but eventually departed.
Following his departure, he continued to call, text, and leave voicemails for five hours, some containing threatening language.
The harassment persisted into the early hours of August 31, with Shahid once more appearing unannounced and threatening harm.
Police were called to the scene but found no trace of him.
Despite knowing the police had been involved, his contact with the woman continued through calls and messages, with Shahid even calling the police himself and refusing to surrender, vowing to keep harassing her.
Further threats were made on September 1, this time directed at her family members.
Shahid was subsequently arrested, and during police interviews, he denied stalking but was charged with the offence.
On January 17, he appeared before Peterborough Crown Court, where Recorder Lorna Skinner QC sentenced him to one year in prison.
The court noted that a probation report identified him as a risk to the public, especially women, with a growing pattern of offending and a lack of accountability.
He was also issued a restraining order banning any contact with his victim for five years and two months.
