SHELIM AHMED: ROCHDALE SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED AFTER VICTIM'S HARROWING TESTIMONY
Shelim Ahmed, a man now aged 37, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses committed in Rochdale during the early 2000s.The case came to light after the victim, who is now a resident of Lancashire, reported the abuse in October 2022.
Following a comprehensive investigation, Ahmed pleaded guilty to 15 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor at Burnley Crown Court in February of this year.
Ahmed, whose address is listed as Corbett Street, Rochdale, was subsequently sentenced to a prison term of 34 months.
In addition to his incarceration, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, a requirement that will remain in effect for an indefinite period.
Due to the fact that the offenses occurred when he was still a juvenile, the court sentenced him as if he were under 18 at the time of the crimes.
Furthermore, a restraining order was issued to prevent Ahmed from making any contact with the victim, ensuring her safety and peace of mind.
The court proceedings included a detailed and emotionally charged statement from the victim, who recounted the traumatic experiences she endured.
She described how Ahmed initially gained her trust by offering attention and compliments, gradually gaining access to her social media accounts.
Over time, he became increasingly controlling and coercive, often under the influence of alcohol, including vodka and alcopops, which he used to manipulate her into sexual acts.
The victim revealed that Ahmed’s predatory behavior extended into her daily life, including waiting outside her swimming lessons and pressuring her into sexual activities after persuading her with alcohol.
She initially felt flattered by the attention but soon found herself overwhelmed by fear and confusion.
Her statement detailed how she became pregnant at the age of 14 as a result of his actions, and how he took her to a clinic to terminate the pregnancy while waiting outside.
She also described how Ahmed forced her to lie about her age and exerted control over her appearance and behavior.
Her account further outlined her descent into substance abuse, dropping out of swimming, and losing her potential due to the trauma inflicted upon her.
The case highlights the devastating impact of such abuse on young victims and underscores the importance of reporting these crimes.
Detective Constable Dan Healey emphasized the bravery of the victim in coming forward and urged others who have experienced similar abuse to report it.
He expressed hope that this case will encourage more victims to speak out and seek help.
Ahmed’s sentencing in February 2025 marked a significant step in delivering justice.
He will also be required to sign the Sex Offenders Register, and the restraining order will remain in effect to protect the victim from further contact.
