SHAWN MILLER FROM BANBURY CAUGHT IN SEX TEXT SCANDAL INVOLVING TEEN GIRLS
In November 2012, a man from Banbury named Shawn Miller was brought before Oxford Crown Court to face serious allegations related to inappropriate communications with underage girls. The case centered around Miller, aged 33 and residing on Middleton Road in Banbury, who admitted to sending explicit text messages and images to two 15-year-old schoolgirls. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of online misconduct that spanned several months.According to the evidence presented, Miller first established contact with one of the girls through Facebook. The initial interaction began when she sent him a message, prompting Miller to reply with a comment. This exchange led the girl to post her phone number on the social media platform, after which Miller started contacting her via text messages. One of the messages from the girl, stating “you look fit,” was met with a provocative response from Miller, who asked, “Are you a virgin, will you have sex with me?”
Meanwhile, a second girl, whom Miller met at a party where he was DJing, also made contact with him through Facebook. Miller attempted to arrange a meeting with her and, inappropriately, asked her to send a photograph of her genitalia. In response, he sent her a picture of his own genitals. This exchange of explicit images was part of a broader pattern of sexual messaging that alarmed the victims and their families.
One of the girls eventually became uncomfortable with the ongoing messages and texted Miller, telling him, “You’re a pervert, stop texting me.” Miller responded by ceasing contact at her request. The court heard that one of the victims received approximately 770 messages from Miller, while the other was subjected to around 1,000 texts, roughly half of which contained sexual content. During police interviews, one of the girls admitted that she had, at one point, considered engaging in sexual activity with Miller, highlighting the disturbing nature of the exchanges.
Prosecutor Cathy Olliver described the girls as “very young for their age” and “quite modest,” emphasizing that the messages appeared to be driven by a “school-girl crush” rather than predatory intent. Importantly, Miller did not attempt to meet the girls in person, but his online behavior was deemed highly inappropriate and concerning.
In sentencing, Judge Mary Jane Mowat acknowledged that Miller “did stop when he was asked to” and noted that the girls had “encouraged” the exchanges. The judge clarified that Miller was “not a man who has been suspected of any previous offences,” but she expressed concern about the potential risk he posed to teenage girls. As part of his sentence, Miller was ordered to attend the Thames Valley Sex Offenders Group Programme, reflecting the court’s focus on rehabilitation and public safety.
