CARE WORKER FILMED THREATENING VULNERABLE ELDER WITH CRUELTY, SENTENCED TO DEFERRED JAIL
A former care worker named Shannon Ashley Anderson has been involved in a disturbing incident where she filmed herself entering the room of a vulnerable 79-year-old dementia sufferer named William Maguire at Fodderty House Care Home in Dingwall. She recorded herself crawling into his room, startling him, and making threatening comments, including the phrase "I'll gut you like a pig." The court was shown a video, shot on Anderson's mobile phone, which captured her crawling on the floor into Mr Maguire's room, pinching his face, and growling the threat.
Anderson had sent this video via social media to another staff member, who then alerted others.
At court, it was revealed that Anderson was employed as a care assistant at the time of the offense, which occurred on September 22 of the previous year.
Mr Maguire, who has since passed away, was described as a vulnerable adult with vascular dementia and a disability on the right side due to a stroke.
The sheriff called her actions "cruelty" and "appalling," emphasizing that she was responsible for caring for a vulnerable individual and that her behavior was "difficult to watch." Anderson's solicitor noted she had some health issues and a troubled past, and she expressed remorse for her actions.
The court sentenced her to a structured deferred sentence for three months, during which she would undertake social work help to better understand the effects of her behavior.
The case will be revisited in February.
The care home manager expressed devastation and confirmed that Anderson was suspended and dismissed immediately after the incident, and the Care Inspectorate was notified.
