TEEN MOPED FLASHER GETS HELP INSTEAD OF JAIL
A moped-riding teenage flasher identified as Shane Michael Whittaker, aged 18, was involved in multiple incidents where he exposed himself to female dog-walkers and joggers while committing sexual acts.Whittaker admitted to police that he did it because he enjoyed the thrill of possibly being caught.
He faced two counts of intentionally exposing himself, with incidents on or around June 1 and July 14.
Whittaker pleaded guilty to these charges and asked for three other offences to be considered.
The court was told he was aware he had a problem and that he needed help.
He was tearful when a district judge emphasized the importance of addressing his issues for his own benefit and the safety of others.
The judge sentenced him to a two-year community order with supervision and referred him to the NSPCC for assessment and advice to manage his impulses and prevent future offences.
District Judge Peter Ward highlighted the seriousness of the offences due to their impact on victims, noting that while some victims might not be significantly upset, others suffered lasting distress.
The prosecutors revealed that initial police inquiries led to his arrest, during which he initially denied the offences but later confessed, citing the thrill of capturing attention.
His defense attorney stated that Whittaker, who works full-time in Skipton and leads an otherwise normal life, understands he needs help and has already sought medical assistance, including an appointment at a resource center.
