MAN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 16 YEARS FOR RAPES
A man found guilty of convincing a 12-year-old girl that they were in a relationship and assaulting her three times has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison.Dylan Sherratt, who was 21 when he engaged in sexual online conversations with the girl, obtained her contact details from someone she knew.
From the beginning, it was clear that the girl was only 12, but Sherratt disclosed he was 21.
At Burnley Crown Court, prosecutor Joseph Allman explained that the messages, beginning in September 2023, quickly turned sexual in nature.
Sherratt’s tone became aggressive and nearly threatening.
The pair exchanged explicit images, with Sherratt instructing the girl to send him sexual pictures of herself.
Legal considerations clarified that the acts involved the production of indecent images involving a minor, not just possession or downloading them.
The defendant and victim met in person several times.
During one encounter in Colne town centre, Sherratt wore a balaclava to conceal his identity.
He also advised her not to wear her school uniform, which the judge noted was because Sherratt was aware of her young age.
Sherratt assaulted the girl on three separate occasions.
The judge stated that a 12-year-old cannot legally consent to sexual activity and that the victim was persuaded rather than willing.
She is not responsible for what happened and bears no blame.
Mitigation from his lawyer, Kristian Cavanagh, stated that the seriousness of the crimes warranted a lengthy prison sentence.
He pointed out Sherratt’s guilty plea and lack of previous convictions.
A psychological report was referenced, indicating that Sherratt’s mental age was similar to that of a 12-year-old, reflecting immaturity.
The victim’s statement revealed she is undergoing counseling and hopes to understand why Sherratt committed these acts, stressing the lasting trauma.
Judge Prowse described Sherratt’s conduct as purposeful and deceptive, noting his efforts to hide his identity and his disregard for the harm caused.
He emphasised that Sherratt acted solely for sexual gratification and lacked remorse.
The court sentenced Sherratt, of Belgrave Road, to an extended term of 16 years and 10 months, comprising a custodial sentence of 10 years and 10 months plus a six-year extended licence.
Additionally, he will be subject to lifelong sex offender registration and a 25-year sexual harm prevention order.
