HALIFAX MAN JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE
In Calderdale, 20 men have been sentenced to a combined total of over 200 years in prison after investigations into historical cases of child sexual abuse. The sentences amount to 219 years collectively, following their convictions for raping and abusing young girls.
The cases involved separate investigations and court trials that confirmed four girls, aged between 12 and 16, were sexually exploited and abused by these men.
Initially, court restrictions were in effect to protect the cases, but these restrictions have now been lifted.
A recent trial that started on October 21 at Bradford Crown Court saw Shafiq Ali Rafiq, 44, from Halifax, found guilty of rape and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Smith noted, "Legal restrictions meant we couldn't publicly share these results sooner.
I welcome the sentences handed down, which reflect the serious nature of the crimes committed against these young victims, as confirmed by the jurors over the court proceedings." "Child sexual exploitation and abuse are significant priorities for West Yorkshire Police and our partners, given the lasting impact on victims and survivors.
Highlighting these prosecutions underscores our commitment to bringing offenders to justice and protecting vulnerable individuals," she added.
She also encouraged victims, stating, "It’s never too late to report child sexual abuse.
Anyone who experienced abuse in the past should speak out and seek support.
Our specially trained officers handle these cases with the utmost care, understanding their sensitive nature."
