NORTHWICH MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING WIFE AFTER ARGUMENT
A HUSBAND strangled his wife for around a minute after an argument about the dog and the garden shed, a court has heard.Sean Stott and his wife had been together for more than two decades at the time of the argument on Thursday, May 22.
Chester Crown Court heard the 52-year-old, of Northwich, pushed and pinned the victim against the shed by the throat while he was shouting abuse at her.
Prosecuting, Alexandra Carrier said he strangled her for a minute until she was able to go to the police.
A victim personal statement said: "The incident made me scared in my own home which is my safe place.
I do not know what my life will be like moving forward, but I am looking forward to moving forward." Stott, of Mayfield Road, was arrested at the scene but not before telling the attending police officers 'I will f****** batter you both'.
He admitted one count of assault by beating but denied intentional strangulation in the days after his arrest.
Two months later, at Warrington Magistrates Court, he was found guilty following a trial of the second of these charges.
Mitigating, Peter Barnett said the defendant has a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder as well as a number of other health issues.
Mr Barnett said: "There is some element of remorse in relation to his conduct." At Chester Crown Court last week the defendant was sentenced to one year and three months in prison and a five-year restraining order.
As a result of the restraining order he is not allowed to contact the victim directly or indirectly nor to go to the victim's address in Northwich.
Judge Simon Berkson said: "You pleaded guilty to assaulting your wife but you pleaded not guilty to the more serious offence of intentionally strangling her for one minute.
You attacked her and you held her throat for one minute which is a dangerous thing to do.
The person you love and loved for 22 years is the person you attacked in her own home."
