SCOTT MCGEACHY SHAKES BABY IN BARRHEAD - BRUTAL CRIME LEAVES INFANT WITH LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES

In a disturbing incident that took place in Barrhead, 38-year-old Scott McGeachy was involved in a violent assault on a two-month-old baby boy, resulting in severe injuries that could have had devastating consequences. The incident occurred in March 2011 when the child's mother returned home to find her infant crying uncontrollably and unusually. Concerned by the baby's condition, she sought medical attention, which subsequently revealed a series of grave injuries.

It was determined that McGeachy, who was present at the scene, had lost his temper due to the baby's persistent crying. In a moment of rage, he grabbed the infant by the chest and shook him with such force that it caused bleeding on the brain, a life-threatening injury. The violent act also resulted in a broken leg and extensive bruising across various parts of the child's body. The trauma was severe enough to induce an epileptic fit in the infant, highlighting the gravity of the injuries sustained.

McGeachy’s actions drew immediate legal scrutiny. Initially charged with attempted murder, he later entered a plea of guilty to a reduced charge, which was accepted by the Crown. During the proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow, Lady Scott, the presiding judge, addressed the seriousness of the offense. She stated, “A prison sentence is not necessary in the circumstances,” and instead ordered McGeachy to undertake 300 hours of unpaid community service. Furthermore, she placed him under supervision for a period of two years, during which he is required to seek treatment for his cannabis addiction.

Lady Scott emphasized the gravity of the assault, remarking, “The assault of a defenseless and vulnerable child is always a serious matter,” and expressed relief that the child had avoided permanent brain damage. The judge’s decision reflected a focus on rehabilitation rather than incarceration, considering the circumstances and McGeachy’s remorse. His defense attorney, Thomas Ross, conveyed that McGeachy is “extremely remorseful about what he did and wishes he could turn the clock back,” highlighting the regret felt by the offender for his actions in Barrhead.
