SALAR RASHID FROM PERTH CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND THREATS IN VULNERABLE WOMAN'S HOME

In a case that has shocked the Perth community, Salar Rashid, a 24-year-old local takeaway business owner, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman inside her own residence, as well as sending her a series of threatening and abusive messages following the incident. The court heard that the assault took place during a night when the victim was heavily intoxicated, having consumed ketamine and vodka, which left her in a highly vulnerable state. The woman, whose identity remains protected, recounted to the court how she was under the influence of a 'K-hole' after taking the drugs, rendering her disoriented and defenseless. She trusted Rashid as a friend, which made her feel safe enough to be in her own home, but that trust was ultimately betrayed when he assaulted her.

During the trial, the victim described feeling lost and helpless, emphasizing her vulnerable condition at the time of the attack. Despite her state, Rashid’s actions crossed a line that the court described as a gross violation of her personal safety and trust. The defendant, however, attempted to dismiss the allegations, claiming that the victim had fabricated the story due to an argument they had that evening. Rashid argued that he was confused about her calling the police, which he dismissed as an 'over-reaction.' He also claimed that he left her flat after a disagreement, suggesting that the events were misunderstood.

Nevertheless, the jury took only an hour to reach a verdict. They convicted Rashid of sexual assault and also found him guilty of threatening or abusive behavior. The court was shown a recording of a distressing 999 emergency call made by the woman, during which Rashid can be heard shouting for his phone back. Rashid later claimed that he was confused at the time and believed the police call was an overreaction to their argument. Despite his attempts to justify his actions, the court was presented with disturbing text messages he sent to the victim afterward. These included messages such as, 'Shame you never tied the rope tighter,' and, 'Tell them my address and what I did to you,' which the court described as 'horrible' and indicative of his threatening behavior.

In sentencing proceedings, Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC decided to defer the final sentence to allow for background reports to be prepared. However, Rashid was immediately placed on the sex offenders register, marking a significant step in the justice process. The court also allowed him to remain on bail, issuing a stern warning that harsher penalties could be imposed if he reoffends in the future. The case has left many in Perth questioning the safety of their homes and the importance of trust in personal relationships, especially when drugs and alcohol are involved. Rashid’s actions have been condemned by the community, and his conviction serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violating personal safety and trust.
