THUG JAILED OVER 4 YEARS AFTER BEATING GIRLFRIEND UNCONSCIOUS WITH WOODEN TABLE LEG
On June 22, 2020, Russell Ward, aged 33 and residing on Dunstable Road, received a sentence of four and a half years' imprisonment at Luton Crown Court for attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.Just over a month later, on July 30, he went to his partner’s house in Luton, where he started shouting in the street.
His partner let him inside in an effort to calm him, but he remained confrontational and aggressive, even threatening her with a hammer.
He proceeded to smash a coffee table and struck her with one of its legs, rendering her unconscious.
Early the following month, on August 8, Ward returned to her home and verbally threatened her again.
Neighbors heard this disturbance and called law enforcement.
The victim then disclosed the earlier assault to officers.
During the subsequent investigation, police searched Ward’s house and found a gym bag containing bloodstained clothing, which forensic tests confirmed belonged to the victim.
Originally, Ward was charged in October with actual bodily harm and threats to kill.
However, with new evidence and testimonies, authorities petitioned the court for the charges to be upgraded.
The court concurred, resulting in Ward’s re-arrest on a more serious charge of attempted grievous bodily harm, a charge he denied.
After a three-day trial held in March, a jury found him guilty.
Detective Leila Dales noted that the neighbors’ quick action prevented further harm, leading to Ward’s imprisonment.
She added that while the victim was terrified and hesitant to report initially, thorough investigation and witness support allowed authorities to strengthen the case.
Dales underscored the importance of tackling domestic abuse and confirmed ongoing efforts to seek justice for victims and hold offenders accountable.
