MAN STRANGLED GIRLFRIEND IN CARDIFF BAR BEFORE PUNCHING HER IN THE FACE

A man in Cardiff was involved in a series of violent acts against his girlfriend, including strangulation and a punch to the face, following an argument that escalated during a night out.

The victim reported feeling upset, humiliated, and embarrassed by the assault.

Khuram Hussain, 24 years old, had traveled with his partner to Cardiff on March 23 and was staying at a local hotel.

The couple went to the city center for a night of drinking before the incidents occurred.

At Cardiff Crown Court, it was heard that the duo, along with another group, visited the Philharmonic pub on St Mary Street at approximately 1:30 am.

A confrontation took place in one of the booths between Hussain and his partner.

Prosecutor Thomas Stanway described how the victim tried to hold Hussain’s arm, prompting him to respond by gripping her around the neck with both hands and pushing her under the table, causing her to fall.

Bystanders intervened to help her as she appeared shocked and her neck muscles tightened.

The court was told she was upset, embarrassed, and humiliated because of the public nature of the attack.

Later, the group moved to the Retro venue on Mill Lane around 2 am.

During this time, a woman in their party accused Hussain of making inappropriate comments about her.

An argument ignited between Hussain and his partner, and she retaliated by throwing a drink in his face.

Hussain then lunged at her, striking her once in the face and knocking her out.

Bouncers stepped in to assist as she regained consciousness.

Police were called to the scene, where Hussain yelled at her to drop the charges.

Hussain, based in Luton, was detained at Cardiff Bay police station.

The victim received treatment for swelling on her cheek and eyebrow, and a blood blister near her eyeball.

When shown CCTV footage of the assault, Hussain appeared shocked and maintained that he did not intend to hurt her.

He pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault.

It emerged that he had two past convictions for assaulting emergency workers and was in breach of a community order.

Representing Hussain, Kathryn Lane told the court that her client recognized the incidents were unpleasant and that he loved the victim.

She noted that Hussain was experiencing issues related to alcohol and anger, and emphasised the importance of addressing his impulsive and aggressive conduct.

Judge Simon Hughes, in sentencing, highlighted the severity of Hussain’s violence, referencing the footage and the fear inflicted on the victim.

He labelled the incident as disgraceful violence occurring in a busy pub.

Hussain was sentenced to 30 weeks imprisonment, with the first half served in prison and the remainder to be served on licence.
