LUTON MAN CONVICTED OF WIFE’S MURDER AFTER YEARS OF ABUSE
A man convicted of killing his wife after enduring years of domestic abuse has received a life sentence.Mohammed Bismal, aged 34 and from Luton, Bedfordshire, admitted to the murder of his 35-year-old wife Azmat, which occurred in January 2004, during a court hearing at St Albans Crown Court.
The judge, Findlay Baker, ordered that Bismal must serve a minimum of 14 years and 74 days in prison.
The court described Bismal as a habitual offender of domestic violence, noting that he had strangled Azmat during a burst of rage.
Prosecutor Stuart Trimmer stated that, outwardly, Azmat appeared to be a cheerful and well-liked woman, but she had endured regular physical assaults from her husband, especially when he was drunk.
This abusive behavior was known to police and social services, and in 2002, she had entered a women's refuge for protection.
Her children were later registered as at risk with social services.
On the evening of her death, Bismal contacted a relative staying in the house, claiming she had suffered a heart attack.
A post-mortem examination later revealed she had been strangled.
Judge Baker condemned Bismal’s actions, commenting that he had a long-standing pattern of domestic violence and that his final act of killing was a wholly unjustified outburst of rage.
The court highlighted that Bismal had initially denied involvement and falsely claimed mental illness to deceive investigators, but ultimately, his guilt was firmly established.
