ROYSTON OWEN'S SHOCKING CRIME AT KENILWORTH'S MILLBROOK GRANGE SCHOOL

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Kenilworth, Royston Owen, a 63-year-old former headteacher of the now-closed Millbrook Grange residential school, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for the sexual abuse of three young girls. The allegations and subsequent conviction have cast a long shadow over the institution that once served as a pioneering facility for teenage girls facing emotional and behavioral challenges.

Owen's tenure at Millbrook Grange spanned over two decades, beginning from the school's inception in 1969 until his arrest in 1991. The school, located in Kenilworth, was notable for being the first purpose-built residential institution in the country dedicated to supporting girls with complex emotional needs. Its closure in April of this year followed a comprehensive review of residential care services within Warwickshire, prompted by concerns raised during the investigation.

The criminal proceedings against Owen revealed disturbing details of abuse that took place as far back as 1970. The court heard evidence from three girls who attended the school, two of whom are now in their late 30s. These women recounted the traumatic experiences they endured at the hands of Owen, which ultimately led to his conviction on five counts of indecent assault. Owen was acquitted on six other charges of assault, but the conviction on the five counts has been seen as a significant step in addressing the abuse.

Throughout the trial, Warwickshire County Council closely monitored the proceedings. Ian Bottrill, the council's Policy and Resources Chairman, stated that the authority had reviewed and strengthened procedures within residential schools to ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable children. He emphasized that the council was considering whether additional measures or actions were necessary in light of the case.

In the wake of the conviction, social services have increased their oversight of the remaining residential schools in Warwickshire, implementing more rigorous checks to uphold care standards. The case has prompted a broader discussion about safeguarding practices in institutions designed to support children with special needs, highlighting the importance of vigilance and accountability in such environments.

Royston Owen, who was found not guilty on six other counts of assault, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 1. The community and the victims await the outcome, which will determine the next chapter in this troubling case that has brought to light serious concerns about past practices at Millbrook Grange and similar institutions.
