TODDLER HEAD TRAUMA: MAN JAILED FOR SEVERE CHILD ABUSE IN PETERHEAD

A man named Robert Wilson, aged 27, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of causing extremely serious injuries to a young child in Peterhead. Wilson was convicted of severely wounding the toddler and wilfully neglecting the child's medical needs. The child suffered serious head trauma, which included head injuries, bruising, and retinal hemorrhaging, with doctors describing the injuries as 'extremely severe.' Despite Wilson's claim that the injuries resulted from a fall down the stairs during a game of 'peekaboo,' medical experts determined that the injuries were consistent with those inflicted by a 'shaken baby.' The jury took just over two hours to convict him of both charges at Aberdeen Sheriff Court. During the trial, Wilson maintained his innocence, stating that the child had fallen and gotten a carpet burn, and he denied any harm. The court was shown footage of Wilson's police interview, where he was questioned about injuries consistent with shaking and abuse. Wilson’s defense argued that he had sought advice concerning the injuries, and emphasized that the injuries could not be precisely dated by medical professionals. However, the judge, Sheriff Andrew Miller, highlighted that Wilson had ignored advice from friends and family to seek medical aid, contributing to the child's suffering. Wilson, who is already serving a sentence at HMP Grampian for assault and danger to life, was sentenced to serve an additional three years behind bars. The sentence acknowledges his previous convictions and the severity of the offenses involving this vulnerable child.
