ABERDEEN BOXER JAILED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE CAMPAIGN
An Aberdeen boxer has been jailed after a court heard he used his fighting skills to subject his former partner to a five-year campaign of domestic abuse.Dainis Sidorov appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where his actions were laid bare.
The 39-year-old, who social workers said would not benefit from programmes aimed at rehabilitating men convicted of domestic abuse, will now serve 12 months behind bars.
‘Calculating’ attacks on partner Fiscal depute Ruaridh McAllister told that Sidorov, a former boxer, and his former partner had been together for 17 years before she broke things off in July 2023.
Throughout their union from April 2019, she described him as 'aggressive and controlling' and witnessed him attack her and send threatening messages at addresses across Aberdeen and Peterhead.
Mr McAllister said: “The accused would shout at her, call her derogatory names in front of her children.
This made her feel uncomfortable, stressed, and almost worthless.
The accused is an ex-boxer and was calculating in displaying aggression towards her.
The accused often struck her on her arms and legs, and on four or five occasions, he struck her on the face.” The woman became so fearful that she would leave the home to stay with friends.
Even after leaving him, she remained a target.
Sidorov would attend her new residence and repeatedly strike the front door, demanding entry, and show up drunk outside her bedroom window.
In one incident, early October 2024, she woke up to find Sidorov knocking on her window.
Despite her pleas for him to leave, he refused.
Her goodwill led to her being choked by Sidorov in her car when he wrapped his arms tightly around her neck.
She managed to remove the car key and try to strike his leg with it but had no effect.
Her boyfriend eventually dragged Sidorov off her after hearing her screams.
When police arrived, he said: “I love my wife, that’s why I’m here.” Defence solicitor George Mathers admitted Sidorov struggled with alcohol and was upset because his children told him she was with another man.
The court noted the behaviour extended over a significant period and was extremely threatening, with the judge emphasizing that only a custodial sentence would reflect the seriousness of his conduct.
Sidorov was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with additional supervision and a non-harassment order.
