VIOLENT PARTNER AND MURDER CONVICT ROBERT TRIGG: THE SHOCKING HISTORY OF ABUSE
Robert Trigg, aged 54, was involved in violent incidents against multiple partners. In a court hearing, it was revealed that he had previously beaten his ex-partner Susan Holland so severely that she was left unconscious and had to spend approximately three weeks in hospital.
Holland recounted that Trigg had called the police saying, “I am going to kill her, you need to arrest me.” Trigg was later convicted in 2017 for the murder of Susan Nicholson, his then-partner, and manslaughter of another previous partner, Caroline Devlin, both at their homes in Worthing.
The inquest into Ms.
Nicholson's death was reopened after Trigg's murder conviction, revealing a history of police visits related to Trigg's abusive behavior.
Since 2003, police had responded to reports involving Trigg’s verbal and physical abuse of women, including incidents involving Holland and Devlin, the latter found dead in her home in 2005.
Police initially classified Devlin’s death as non-suspicious, citing natural causes.
Trigg's history also includes only one caution for domestic violence prior to the murders.
An inquest heard that former detective Nigel Brown recognized the potential for violence in Trigg’s relationships, though at the time, there was no proof of violence, which limited the police's response.
The ongoing inquest aims to further investigate the police’s handling of reports and the circumstances leading to the deaths.
