MAN JAILED FOR KILLING HIS 80-YEAR-OLD FRIEND
A man has received a prison sentence after admitting to the manslaughter of 80-year-old Anthony Scarrott from Worthing.Arno Engels, aged 40 and without a fixed residence, appeared before Hove Crown Court on Thursday, 30 April, for sentencing after pleading guilty to manslaughter during a hearing on 30 January.
His term was set at two years and four months in prison.
Police initiated a murder inquiry after the victim, known as Tony, was found suffering from severe head injuries at his home on Westcourt Road in Worthing on 11 September 2025.
Despite being taken to hospital, Tony tragically died there on 14 September.
It was determined that Engels, who had been staying at Tony’s flat, had slapped him across the face, causing him to fall backward and strike his head.
Initially, Engels was detained on suspicion of assault and was released on bail while investigations continued.
When authorities learned of Tony’s death, Engels was found in the street en route to surrender at a police station.
He confessed to police that he had assaulted Tony during an argument.
Following his arrest on suspicion of murder, further police interviews led Engels to admit that he had hit Tony and was responsible for his death.
He was formally charged with murder, held in custody, and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
