COLNE MAN JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING SLEEPING WOMAN
A man from Colne, Richard Major-Smith, has been sentenced after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman while she was asleep.
The incident, described as 'opportunistic,' involved Major-Smith inappropriately touching the sleeping woman, lifting her top, and touching her breasts.
The court heard that the assault happened on the morning of August 3, after a night of drinking with friends, including the victim and a male witness who was also asleep on the same bed.
The victim was later informed about what had occurred, which caused her to cry and feel violated.
Major-Smith, of Earl Street, Colne, surrendered himself to police before the police report; he was described as 'deeply ashamed and remorseful.' The judge, Judge Andrew Jefferies QC, sentenced him to eight months in prison and imposed a restraining order preventing contact with the victim for two years, emphasizing that the only suitable punishment was custody.
