HALIFAX DOCTOR SPARED JAIL AFTER ADMITTING CHILD ABUSE IMAGE POSSESSION
A hospital consultant identified as Dr Richard Johnson, aged 54, was found with over 54,000 indecent images of children on four devices.
Among these images, more than 300 were categorized as Category A, which constitutes the most severe form of child abuse.
Johnson admitted to police that he viewed the images daily, stating, ‘I use it almost as a stress buster, not a sexual matter, but to get a buzz and release anxiety.’ He was charged with ten offenses related to possessing indecent images of children at Bradford Crown Court and received a sentence of six months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to undertake 250 hours of unpaid work, pay £500 in costs, forfeit his computers, register as a sex offender for five years, and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
The court was told that Johnson possessed 335 Category A images, including 69 videos, along with thousands of Category B and C images.
Despite his actions, Johnson, from Halifax, was described by his defense as someone under significant work pressure who used pornography as a release and expressed deep remorse.
The judge emphasized that each image depicts real children being abused and warned that demand for such images sustains real abuse.
Johnson’s previous good conduct, including participating in courses with the Lucy Faithful Foundation and helping build hospitals in poorer countries, was acknowledged.
Following his conviction, the NHS trust he worked for confirmed he was no longer employed there, although an internal investigation found no misconduct within the workplace.
The court highlighted that possessing such images is not victimless and can contribute to ongoing harm to children.
The judge underlined that being well-educated and professional does not exempt someone from the consequences of criminal behavior.
