RAYMOND MCMAHON JAIL SENTENCE IN WALLASEY FOR INDECENT EXPOSURE

In September 2008, Raymond McMahon, a 39-year-old community support worker from Upton, Wallasey, was sentenced to 12 months in jail after admitting to indecently exposing himself to two young girls in a Central Park rose garden.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that McMahon had previous convictions for similar offences and had confessed to a probation officer that he had committed the act on another occasion, although he was not prosecuted for that incident.

Judge John Roberts addressed McMahon, stating, “You present a significant risk of serious harm of committing further offences.” He also ordered McMahon to register as a sex offender for ten years and imposed an indefinite ban on working with children.

Prosecutor Deborah Birrell explained that around noon on April 13 of that year, a 15-year-old girl and her 13-year-old friend were in the rose garden at Central Park, Liscard. The girls observed McMahon, who appeared to be staring at them, with his zip undone while he was playing with himself. Feeling uncomfortable, they moved away but noticed he kept staring and seemed to follow them.

One of the girls phoned her father, who offered to pick them up and contacted the police. Officers arriving at the scene saw McMahon getting into a car with his jeans open. They stopped and arrested him.

McMahon admitted to seeing the girls but denied having his zip undone or touching himself, according to Mrs. Birrell. The court heard that both girls were left shaken and uncomfortable. The older girl, in particular, no longer visits the park regularly and feels uneasy when she sees a lone man.

Defence solicitor Paul Wood stated that McMahon had pleaded guilty to the charge and had been honest with the probation service. He acknowledged having a problem and has ongoing health issues, including diabetes. Once employed as a butcher, McMahon had spent six years working as a community support worker assisting vulnerable individuals with mental health issues and substance dependencies. However, he lost that job due to his behaviour and is currently taking anti-depressants.

Mr. Wood also added that McMahon's partner suffered a stroke in 2006, and he helps care for her.
