KENT GRANDMOTHER MURDERED IN SHOP BASEMENT
A 69-year-old grandmother named Harjit Chaggar was murdered and her body was subsequently concealed beneath floorboards in a food shop in Chatham, Kent. The four men charged in connection with her death—Mohammad Islam (29, Gillingham), Murshed Miah (38, Maidstone), Abdul Hannan (45, Maidstone), and Rashad Miah (27, Chatham)—were all convicted after an eight-week court trial at Canterbury Crown Court.
Mohammad Islam and Murshed Miah received life sentences, each with a minimum of 25 years to serve, while Abdul Hannan and Rashad Miah were given five-year prison terms.
Evidence presented at court indicated that her severely decomposed remains showed injuries consistent with being thrown into the basement alive.
The reason for her murder remains uncertain.
Detective Superintendent Rob Vinson expressed hope that the judgments would bring some resolution for her loved ones, commenting, “Hannan, Islam, and the Miah brothers have not told us what exactly happened once Mrs.
Chaggar went behind the shop’s premises.
Their refusal to speak means we may never fully understand the truth...”
