YORK MAN JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER AFTER ELDERLY WOMAN’S DEATH
A man without a fixed address, Peter Harris, was convicted of manslaughter and received a prison sentence in connection with the death of Elsie Mowbray, an 87-year-old woman. The incident happened in January when Harris rang her doorbell on Leeman Road, York, and forcefully entered her home under the pretense of looking for his rabbit.
During a confrontation with her son, a physical struggle occurred, leading Mrs.
Mowbray to fall and strike her head on the wall forcefully enough to cause an imprint in the plaster.
She was transported to hospital but died after a week, on July 8, 2014.
Harris had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter, burglary, and robbery during a separate hearing.
The court sentenced him to a combined term of 12 years — eight years and nine months for manslaughter and four years for burglary, to run at the same time.
An additional sentence of three years and three months was given for the robbery, which is to be served after the other terms.
The case was summarized as involving a man jailed for killing a 'gentle old lady' who died in hospital following her home being burglarized.
Detective Superintendent Heather Pearson from North Yorkshire Police stated that Harris was aware the victim was elderly and vulnerable when she answered the door.
She further explained that Harris entered her home without regard for her safety and displayed no remorse afterward.
The tragic outcome left a family mourning the loss of their loved one due to his actions.
The victim’s relatives issued a statement hoping for peace, underscoring that it was Harris’s criminal conduct that led to Elsie Mowbray’s death.
