PETER CULLEN FROM LOWESTOFT SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE OF 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Lowestoft, Peter Cullen, aged 42, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after being found guilty of raping an 11-year-old girl.The incident, which took place in May 2019, involved serious allegations of sexual assault against a young child, and the subsequent efforts by Cullen to conceal his actions have added to the gravity of the case.
According to court proceedings, Cullen initially denied any involvement when questioned by police.
However, after the victim confided in her mother about the abuse she had endured, Cullen attempted to manipulate the situation by sending her a WhatsApp message.
In this message, he urged her to lie about what had happened, trying to dissuade her from revealing the truth.
The court heard that Cullen's actions were part of an effort to cover up the assault and avoid accountability.
Prosecutor Lindsay Cox detailed that Cullen was arrested at his workplace despite his attempts to silence the victim.
The young girl had come forward, stating she wanted to 'speak up' about the abuse, which she had kept secret for some time.
During police interviews, Cullen initially denied the allegations but later changed his plea to guilty when he appeared in court, acknowledging his guilt.
The court was informed that the victim is now undergoing counselling to cope with the trauma inflicted upon her.
Cullen, who resides on Pinewood Avenue in Oulton Broad, pleaded guilty to charges of rape and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
His sentencing reflects the severity of his crimes, with the judge, Maureen Bacon, emphasizing the gravity of the offences.
Judge Bacon stated, “I have to sentence you for extremely grave offences,” highlighting the seriousness of Cullen’s actions.
She pointed out that Cullen’s attempt to cover up the crime by trying to persuade the victim to lie was particularly reprehensible.
Despite this, the judge acknowledged that Cullen’s guilty plea had spared the victim from having to testify in court, which was a mitigating factor in her sentencing decision.
In addition to the 12-year prison term, Cullen was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
He was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and will serve an extended period of licence upon his release from prison, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions to prevent further harm.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals in the community of Lowestoft.
