PETER COOK PREDATOR FROM DALTON AND KIRKBY PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST VULNERABLE GIRLS IN BARROW
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Dalton and Kirkby, Peter Cook, a 38-year-old man originally from Dalton, has admitted to engaging in sexual activities with young girls he targeted due to their vulnerability. The offences, which took place in Barrow, have brought to light a pattern of predatory behavior by Cook, who exploited the trust and innocence of his young victims.Cook was scheduled to stand trial at Barrow Crown Court yesterday; however, at the last minute, he changed his plea to guilty, avoiding a lengthy court process. His admission of guilt includes charges of sexual intercourse with a girl aged 12, as well as indecent assault against her. Additionally, Cook pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault against another girl of the same age, all of which occurred in Barrow in 1998.
Detective Sergeant John Dilks, who led the investigation, described Cook’s attitude throughout the process as one of arrogance and disrespect towards both his victims and law enforcement officials. DS Dilks emphasized that Cook had shown little remorse and had taken advantage of the girls’ vulnerability, befriending them before exploiting their trust for his own gratification.
According to DS Dilks, the victim who initially came forward did so in June of the previous year, leading to Cook’s arrest in October. As the investigation progressed, two additional victims came forward, resulting in further charges being filed against him in December. The detective noted that Cook likely changed his plea because of the strong evidence against him, believing he could evade justice due to the passage of time.
DS Dilks praised the bravery of the victims, highlighting their courage and resilience in coming forward after so many years. He stated, “I can’t speak highly enough about their bravery in coming forward to the police. This case once again demonstrates that time does not diminish the importance of justice. The police and Crown Prosecution Service worked tirelessly to build a solid case against Cook.”
He also remarked on Cook’s calculated approach to selecting his victims, taking advantage of their vulnerability, and expressed hope that this case would serve as a reminder that justice can be pursued regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
