BILLINGHAM CARER PETER BENNETT JAILED FOR ABUSE OF HOSPITAL PATIENTS
Four caregivers who were found guilty of mistreating patients at a secure healthcare facility have received suspended sentences.
Among them, Peter Bennett, aged 54 and residing on Redworth Road in Billingham, Teesside, was sentenced to four months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for 18 months.
Bennett was convicted on two charges after undercover footage from BBC Panorama revealed him mocking, taunting, and threatening vulnerable patients who required ongoing care.
Prosecutors noted that Bennett had been convicted previously last year by a jury, and Judge Chris Smith described Whorlton Hall as an 'unpredictable and inherently frightening place to live.' The hospital, operated privately by Cygnet and funded by the NHS, has since closed.
Bennett was also observed making reference to balloons and ridiculing communication challenges faced by patients in a deliberate manner.
Evidence presented in court indicated Bennett's behavior crossed into criminality, and he was among several staff members sentenced for their roles in the mistreatment.
The case exposed a 'malign culture' at Whorlton Hall, with the judge stating that all four caregivers, including Bennett, let down those patients and their families, violating essential trust.
