RAF OFFICER PAUL MILES SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES
A serviceman from the RAF has been sentenced to nine years in prison following his conviction for rape and other sexual offences.Paul Miles, aged 53 from RAF High Wycombe, committed a sexual assault and rape against a woman on 12 March 2015, and was also involved in sexual misconduct with her from August 2012 through March 2015.
Miles had served in the RAF for 30 years and had risen through the ranks to become a warrant officer, which is the highest level among non-commissioned officers.
After his conviction, he was discharged from the military.
The presiding judge, Justin Cole, described Miles’ acts as 'predatory,' criticizing the nature of his crimes.
The Bucks Free Press quoted the judge saying: 'Counts one and two required a degree of planning.
You took advantage of a young woman who was vulnerable, intoxicated, and asleep when you assaulted her.' He also pointed out that Miles had previously been considered of good character, noting his career as a military chef and his long service record.
The judge emphasized that Miles showed no remorse and dismissed his claims of consensual activity, suggesting that these had been exaggerated into sexual acts.
Expressing concern for the victim's future, the judge wished her strength as she rebuilds her life.
Detective Constable Andy Smith, who led the investigation, stated: 'Miles has been convicted of three sexual offences after an extensive investigation.
I hope this helps the victim find some closure.
Her willingness to testify at court during such a difficult process is truly brave.' He further explained, 'This case demonstrates our serious approach to victims of sexual offences.
We listen to those who report crimes and provide appropriate support.' Following an eight-day trial, the jury found Miles guilty unanimously.
He was cleared of an additional sexual assault charge involving another woman dating from December 2010 to January 2011.
He received a combined sentence of nine years for rape, five years for sexual assault by penetration, and three years for sexual touching, with all terms to run concurrently.
