PAUL HODGSON FROM WYMONDHAM ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD SEXUAL IMAGE OFFENSES

In a case that has raised concerns about the handling of serious sexual offenses, Paul Hodgson, a resident of Wymondham, was brought before Norwich Crown Court in March 2018 to face charges related to the possession of a vast collection of illegal images. Hodgson, aged 73, was found to have accumulated and viewed more than 1,700 indecent images depicting children as young as five or six years old, spanning a period from 2009 to 2017.

During the court proceedings on March 22, Hodgson pleaded guilty to two significant counts: one involving the possession of extreme pornography that included animals, and another concerning the possession of indecent images of children. Despite the gravity of these charges, Hodgson was not sentenced to prison. Instead, the court imposed a three-year community supervision order, which requires him to undergo ongoing rehabilitation programs and adhere to strict conditions.

The case was prosecuted by Martin Ivory, who detailed how Hodgson’s internet activity clearly indicated deliberate searches and viewing of these illicit images. The police had acted swiftly, executing a search warrant at Hodgson’s residence in Petunia Court, Wymondham, in September of the previous year. During the search, authorities discovered images that were deemed 'indicative' of Hodgson’s involvement in the crimes.

Hodgson’s criminal history includes three prior convictions, notably for exposing himself to an 11-year-old girl, which underscores a pattern of concerning behavior. The court heard that Hodgson’s actions and history posed a significant risk to the public, prompting the judge to emphasize the importance of addressing the underlying issues behind his offenses.

Judge Moore, presiding over the case, explained her decision not to send Hodgson to prison. She stated, “The probation officers are right that Hodgson poses a danger to the public, and it is important to address the underlying issues.” She further added, “You could go to prison for three months and not address these problems, and still be a danger to the community. With a community order, you will have to confront them. Do not think you have gotten away with a soft punishment; this is your last chance.”

Judge Moore warned Hodgson that if he failed to actively participate in his rehabilitation or if probation officers found him not making genuine efforts, he could be brought back before the court. She reserved the case for herself, making it clear that Hodgson would face further consequences if he reoffended.

As part of his sentence, Hodgson is required to register as a sex offender and must provide access to his mobile and web browsing history whenever requested by law enforcement authorities. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the management and supervision of individuals convicted of such serious offenses, especially in communities like Wymondham where residents expect strict enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable populations.
