ANDREW BLUNDELL FROM WYMONDHAM ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DISCOVERING 8,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN POLICE RAID
In March 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Blundell, a resident of Wymondham, who was found to possess a staggering collection of indecent images of children. The incident came to light following a police raid, during which authorities uncovered approximately 8,000 such images stored on his computer. This discovery raised serious concerns about the extent of his illicit activities and his potential risk to the community.Blundell, aged 62, was identified as the individual responsible for downloading these images over a span of three years, from July 2016 to August 29, 2019. Among the collection, authorities found 958 images classified in the most serious category, indicating the severity of the material involved. Despite the large volume of images, there was no evidence to suggest that Blundell had distributed any of the content he had downloaded, which included hundreds of images.
During the court proceedings at Norwich Crown Court, Blundell admitted to charges of downloading indecent images of children and possessing 49 prohibited images along with three extreme pornographic images. It was also revealed that he had a prior conviction related to similar offenses back in 2003, for which he served a six-month jail sentence. This history underscored a pattern of concerning behavior.
Prosecutor Lynne Shirley emphasized the gravity of the case, noting the total number of images involved. Despite the alarming quantity, she clarified that there was no indication Blundell had engaged in distribution of the images, which could have posed additional risks.
In sentencing, Recorder Guy Ayers decided on a 16-month prison term, which was suspended for 21 months. Additionally, Blundell was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. As part of his rehabilitation and monitoring, he will also be required to participate in a sex offenders’ treatment programme and complete 80 hours of unpaid community work. The court’s decision aimed to balance punishment with measures intended to prevent future offenses and protect the public from potential harm.
