PAUL DUNLEAVY: HORRIFIC CHILD SEX OFFENDER FROM ARMAGH, BELFAST, AND NEWRY SENTENCED IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Update 26/08/2025: Paul Dunleavy 89, died outside of a hospital after being transferred from Maghaberry Prison.

A notorious Christian Brother, Paul Dunleavy, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for a long history of child sexual abuse spanning several decades across multiple schools in Northern Ireland.

The 89-year-old, whose residence was listed as Glen Road in Belfast, has left a trail of devastation, with one of his victims describing him as a "big dark shadow" that has profoundly destroyed his life.

His imprisonment is set for ten years, but due to his age and health, he is expected to pass away in prison, having been assessed with a life expectancy of only four more years.

Dunleavy’s criminal record now includes three separate convictions, but it is only with this latest sentencing that the full extent of his offending has been publicly revealed.

In total, he has been convicted of 72 separate offences involving 18 victims, with crimes committed between 1964 and 1991.

Many of these offences are among the most serious under current sexual offences legislation, including acts that would be classified as rape.

Dunleavy served as a school principal and taught at four different primary and secondary schools located in Belfast, Newry, and Armagh from the 1960s until his retirement in 1997.

The first allegations against him emerged in 2010, prompting investigations that uncovered decades of abuse.

One survivor, who was abused as a child, recounted knowing others who had taken their own lives as a direct result of Dunleavy’s actions.

He expressed the tragic reality that many victims, some of whom did not survive their teenage years or early twenties, were driven to despair and self-harm because of the abuse they endured.

In the most recent case for which Dunleavy was convicted, he faced 36 charges involving nine victims.

These included multiple counts of indecent assault, four counts of gross indecency, and a charge of attempted buggery of a child.

The court heard that Dunleavy had persistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that his victims had fabricated their stories in hopes of receiving compensation.

Judge Patrick Lynch condemned this as a "vile accusation," emphasizing that Dunleavy’s continued denial reflected a "malign stubbornness" and an unwillingness to accept responsibility for his actions.

Judge Lynch also commended the bravery of the nine victims who came forward in this case, expressing hope that their courage would serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar crimes.

The judge’s remarks underscored the importance of justice and the ongoing fight against child abuse in Northern Ireland.
