2010: LOWESTOFT MAN JAILED FOR STABBING HIS WIFE IN THE NECK

A jealous husband who stabbed his wife in the neck because he thought she was having an affair has been locked up indefinitely.

Sentencing Paul Aldous to an indeterminate sentence for public protection, Judge David Goodin said he had been "fuelled by drink and sexual jealousy" when he attacked his wife Maria in May.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that following the attack at the couple's home in Sussex Road, Lowestoft, Mrs Aldous bled profusely from the wound and feared she was going to pass out.

She had tried to get her husband to call for an ambulance and told him she would say her injury was an accident, said Michael Crimp, prosecuting.

Despite her weak state, Mrs Aldous had managed to stagger out of the house where she screamed for help to a passer-by.

Mrs Aldous had then collapsed by her gate and paramedics who treated her had been concerned because her heart rate had been very fast and her blood pressure very low.

Mrs Aldous was taken to hospital where she was found to have a 2cm cut to her neck.

Aldous, 39, admitted wounding his wife with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

He will have to serve at least three years of the indeterminate sentence before he can be considered for release by the parole board and will only be released when he is no longer considered a risk to the public.

Simon Gladwell, for Aldous, who was on licence for an offence of robbery at the time of the stabbing, said his client had initially intended to frighten his wife with the knife.

He said Aldous had been married to his wife for more than three years and she had not referred to any previous incidents of violence by him.
