ROTHESAY RAPIST JAILED FOR 17 YEARS OF ABUSES
A violent rapist who brutalised a woman and girl during a series of sex attacks has been sentenced to 17 years of imprisonment.Nathan Gillet, aged 50, committed these crimes over a 17-year period on the Isle of Bute.
Despite denying the charges, he was found guilty of 13 offences including rape, sexual assault, and physical assault of a boy.
During the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Lord Armstrong stated, "These crimes of which you have been convicted are disturbing and grave." Gillet repeatedly attacked a woman between 2002 and 2019, raping her on one occasion while she was asleep, intoxicated, and partially unconscious.
He also assaulted a schoolgirl multiple times, acting in a threatening and abusive manner, sexually abusing her when she was under 13, and raping her once she became a teenager.
The court noted that Gillet continues to deny responsibility and has been assessed as posing a high risk of reoffending.
The impact statements from victims described long-term and devastating effects on their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
In addition to his 17-year sentence, Gillet will be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and supervised for five years upon release.
The judge emphasized the need for extended sentencing to protect the public from severe harm.
Gillet's defense attorney mentioned that he has now lost his home and business.
