BRACKNELL OFFENDER JAILED FOR MURDER WITH PLIERS
Muhammed Shafi, aged 28 from Bracknell in Berkshire, was found guilty of the murder of Tuanjai Sprengel and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years. The court heard that Shafi had previously denied murdering Ms Sprengel but admitted causing her death.
The incident occurred when Ms Sprengel was found in Bracknell subway on May 27, and the court described her death as "a very violent and pointless death".
Ms Sprengel, who was 43 and a mother of one, had reportedly suffered a brutal and savage attack involving stabbing her and then beating her to death with a pair of pliers.
The couple had a relationship that began in 2011, married in an Islamic ceremony on New Year's Eve, and had attempted to register their marriage before Shafi's student visa expired.
On the night of her death, Ms Sprengel confided in a woman at a betting shop that Shafi was jealous, controlling, and prevented her from working.
CCTV footage showed Shafi walking into the subway alone after they had lost money on roulette machines.
Police indicated that Shafi was trying to leverage his relationship with Ms Sprengel to stay in the UK, despite her still being legally married to her German husband at the time of her death.
After the verdict, authorities emphasized that Ms Sprengel had suffered "a very violent and pointless death" and described the attack as "particularly brutal and savage".
