COURT CUTS MURDER SENTENCES IN KENT SHOP BASEMENT CASE
Two men, Mohammad Islam and Murshed Miah, who had been previously convicted and sentenced to serve a minimum of 25 years in prison for the murder of Harjit Chaggar, a 69-year-old woman, saw their sentences reduced on appeal.
The Court of Appeal judges determined that the original sentences were excessive.
Mohammad Islam, who was captured on CCTV beckoning the victim to the Sani Globe Food store on her last day alive, had his sentence lowered from 25 years to 23 years.
Murshed Miah's sentence was reduced from 25 years to 22 years.
The murder of Mrs.
Chaggar occurred after her body was discovered in the shop's basement, and her injuries suggested she was forced into the basement while still alive.
The motive for her murder remains unclear.
The judges described the killing as 'shocking' but concluded the original sentences were too long and needed to be shortened, taking into account the actual circumstances of the crime.
