GLASGOW UBER DRIVER WITH 12-YEAR DOMESTIC ABUSE CONVICTION LOSES LICENCE

AN UBER driver convicted of 12-years of domestic abuse against his wife has lost his private hire car licence.Mohammad Aziz, 48, was found guilty of repeatedly kicking the woman on her face and body, striking her with a belt, a pair of kitchen tongs, and seizing her by her hair on multiple occasions between 2005 and 2017.In May 2018 Aziz was convicted of assault causing injury to his wife, from whom he is now separated. He was ordered to complete a community payback order and 240 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.Aziz was brought before the licensing committee on Thursday to explain himself, but his lawyer claimed the incidents had been fabricated, stating that his client accepted his conviction and respected the verdict but denied the incidents happened. The lawyer said: “My client accepts that he was convicted and respects the guilty verdict but claims these incidents did not happen. He maintains that members of his family made false allegations about him. His daughter supported his case, and he had previously filed a complaint against his son about his daughter.”The chairman, Councillor Alex Wilson, questioned Aziz’s version of events and pointed out that the court’s guilty verdict indicated these incidents did occur, stating: “The court still found him guilty of domestic abuse which is not acceptable or tolerated especially against a partner who you are supposed to love.”Aziz, who has been driving for 30 years and held his private hire licence for about three years, served nearly 19,000 customers in 17,959 trips. Despite his good ratings and long hours of work, the licensing authorities refused to renew his licence following discussions.
