MICHAEL WHITWOOD FROM WINSFORD ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DOWNLOAD OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a case that has shocked the community of Winsford, Michael Whitwood, a 27-year-old resident of Wharton Hall on Wharton Road, was found guilty of downloading a significant number of indecent images involving children.Despite the gravity of his actions, Whitwood was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment but received a suspended prison term that will keep him out of jail for the time being.
On a Friday at Vale Royal Magistrates’ Court, Whitwood pleaded guilty to 16 charges related to the possession and download of child exploitation material.
The court was informed that he had downloaded a total of 96 indecent images, some of which depicted very young children.
Among these disturbing images was one showing a girl aged between five and eight years old with an adult male.
Another image featured an 11-year-old boy in the company of a woman, and there were additional images portraying young children engaged in lewd and inappropriate behavior with each other.
Prosecutor Lauren Costello detailed the evidence against Whitwood, revealing that authorities had seized two desktop computers from his residence.
She explained that Whitwood had attempted to conceal his identity by pretending to be a 16-year-old girl online, believing this would make it easier for him to communicate and receive indecent images.
The investigation uncovered that he had engaged in file sharing, which facilitated the distribution of such material.
Furthermore, Whitwood used the email address [email protected] to encourage sexual conversations, indicating a deliberate effort to seek out and engage in sexual chats involving minors.
Costello emphasized that Whitwood had admitted to having a sexual interest in children, a confession that underscores the seriousness of his offenses.
The court heard that his actions were premeditated and involved multiple forms of online misconduct.
Representing Whitwood, his defense solicitor Stephen Rodgers acknowledged the severity of the case.
He stated, “This is an extremely serious case and I would suspect that Whitwood has always known that he would be charged with these offences and these events have been hanging over him like the sword of Damocles.” Rodgers further added that Whitwood accepted responsibility for his actions but emphasized that he required supervision moving forward.
Instead of facing immediate imprisonment, Whitwood was sentenced to a 24-month supervision order, which will oversee his conduct and rehabilitation.
The court also ordered the confiscation of his computers, mandated that he attend a sexual offences prevention programme, and required him to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
Additionally, Whitwood was ordered to pay court costs amounting to £90.
This case highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding online child exploitation and the importance of rigorous legal measures to address such heinous crimes, even when offenders are given suspended sentences.
