ARMY OFFICER PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL ASSAULT OF TEENAGE SOLDIER WHO TOOK HER OWN LIFE
Michael Webber, a former Sergeant Major in the Army, admitted guilt to charges of sexually assaulting a teenage female soldier named Jaysley Beck, who later died by suicide.Webber, who served as a Battery Sergeant Major with the Royal Artillery, held Gunner Beck down and tried to kiss her during a work social event.
The incident was initially classified as 'inappropriate behaviour unbecoming of a warrant officer,' and he received a minor administrative punishment.
Despite Gunner Beck reporting the assault on two separate occasions, the Army’s leadership did not involve law enforcement, a decision her family believes played a role in her tragic death.
After an inquest, police confirmed charges, and Webber pleaded guilty during a pre-trial hearing.
The Army issued an apology for its handling of the case and announced new policies to address unacceptable sexual conduct.
While her family expressed some relief that Webber admitted guilt, they also mourned her loss deeply.
Webber remains in custody as he awaits sentencing.
